Yes, we based our look on these girls and, of course, Clueless (Picture: Twentieth Century Fox)

The 90s wins the award for the most unforgivable fashion of the last 100 years.

Although we thought we were hot stuff at the time – being so on trend outside the school gates with our friends – let’s take a look back at just how ridiculous we looked.

Here are 21 things no 90s school girl left the house without.

1. A mood ring

Oh look, I’m happy (Picture: Yvette Caster/Metro)

What a conversation starter this was.

A sure fire way to flirt with the irresistibly appealing naughty boy of the class.

Guess what mood I’m in?

2. Shag bands

OH NO YOU BROKE ONE!

3. A Blossom hat

We love you, Blossom and Six! (Picture: Buena Vista International)

Oh yeah. We’re going for the American look.

Look how cool we are. Extra points for a velvet Six hat.

4. A zig zag parting

Because you’re way too rebellious for a standard parting and nobody can stop you.

5. A tiny Nike rucksack

This may have crossed over into the early noughties but it’s definitely worth mentioning.

You could only have one of these though if you had enough rule breaking friends who had the guts graffiti all over it.

The purpose of this bag was to stuff your blazer in because you’re too cool to wear a blazer.

6. Hair mascara

Now we’re talking.

Nothing looks better than a stiff chunk of hair swinging by your face that has a slight colour to it.

7. Massive hooped earrings

The bigger the better.

8. A tattoo choker

Yeah, I’m 12 and I’ve got a neck tattoo (choker). What of it.

9. A ziz zag hairband

These rocked and it wouldn’t be so bad if they came back.

10. Dark mahogany/plum lipstick

Because goth = cool.

11. Or really pale lipstick with dark lip liner

This was so girl band and grown up.

12. Glitter hairspray

You simply wouldn’t be seen dead at the school disco without glitter in your hair.

13. A dragon vest top

Usually matched with baggy combat trousers.

14. Stick on belly gems

Because it was the next best age appropriate thing to getting your belly button pierced.

15. Butterfly clips

These were just so pretty and you had to have this hairstyle.

16. Crop tops and extreme baggy trousers

This was the sexiest outfit you could wear once upon a time. Cringe.

17. Any type of Yin Yang accessory

Because you were so spiritual.

18. Reebok Classics

This shoe was not even a question of choice. You had to have a pair. They’re classics, hello?

19. Adidas tracksuit bottoms with the signature leg stripes

Thanks for that one, Sporty Spice.

20. Ridiculous platform shoes

Another one we owe to the Spice Girls

21. The messy bun

Because spending hours making sure your hair is the perfect mess was all the rage.
