Borussia Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke is confident he can convince Marco Reus to snub a move to the Premier League if the club secures European football for next season.
Reus has been linked with a transfer to England’s top-flight in recent weeks – with Chelsea, in particular, believed to be close to securing the in-demand forward’s signature in January.
However, despite interest from abroad and German giants Bayern Munich, Watzke believes playing in the Champions League could prove vital in helping Dortmund hold onto the Germany international.
‘The fact is that he strongly identifies himself with the city and with Dortmund in particular,’ Watzke told German newspaper Ruhr Nachrichten.
‘We have quite a lot to bring to the table. But there’s no denying that it would be easier for him to stay if we would consistently play European football.’
Jurgen Klopp’s Dortmund side are currently in 15th place in the Bundesliga table, nine points behind fourth-placed Hannover.
