A Canadian soldier has died after being hit by a driver who may have had links to radical Islam.
The deceased, who was not named, was one of two soldiers struck by Martin Couture Rouleau, 25, who was later shot and killed by police following a car chase yesterday.
The second armed forces member survived the incident in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, and didn’t suffer injuries that were as serious.
Royal Canadian Mounted Police spokesman David Falls said Rouleau ‘was known to Federal authorities’ and ‘authorities were concerned that he had become radicalised.’
Neighbor Daniel Fortin added he had known the suspect, who lived with his father in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, since he was a child.
He said over the past year or so, Rouleau grew out his beard and began wearing loose-fitting Muslim clothing but that he never felt threatened by him.
