Coronation Street stalwart Steve McDonald will battle depression in secret until a tragedy forces him to take action.

Speaking at a press event for upcoming Corrie storylines, show boss Stuart Blackburn said: ‘A story close to my heart is Steve battling secret depression.

‘He’s scared and confused and he thinks that stuff like this doesn’t happen to people like him. He’s absolutely terrified of admitting it.’

Further explaining the storyline, he continued: ‘It will come to a head in January when a tragedy will strike that will force him to face those demons.

‘This is simply a love story between Steve and Michelle.’
