A former pornstar has been allowed to wear a colander on her head in her driving licence photo because of her Pastafarian faith.

Asia Lemmon, whose legal name is Jessica Steinhauser, said the colander is a symbol of her membership of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, a satirical group that encourages a light-hearted view of religion.

‘I’m a really proud, outspoken atheist,’ she told The Spectrum.

‘I am proud of Utah for allowing freedom of all religions in what is considered by many to be a one-religion state.’

It has taken Alm three years to get the license, after arguing that the colander was a requirement of Pastafarianism. Mr Alm, an entrepreneur, said he had the idea when he read that headgear was allowed in official pictures only for 'confessional' reasons. The atheist belongs to the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, a light-hearted 'faith' whose members call themselves Pastafarians because their 'only dogma is the rejection of dogma'. Accordingly, Mr Alm sent his application for a new driver's license in 2008 along with a picture of himself with a colander on his head

Two-thirds of Utah residents identify as Mormons, while the state is also home to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Bobby Henderson, who founded the CRSM, said they were fortunate to have Ms Lemmon as a member of the church.

‘I’m 100 percent sure Asia is doing this for good-natured reasons. She’s great,’ he said.

Nannette Rolfe, the director of Utah’s DMV licence division, said about a dozen Pastafarians have had their photos taken wearing the colander.

‘As long as we can get a visual of the face, we’re fine if they choose to wear the headgear.’
