Here’s the very first snap of J. K. Rowling’s The Casual Vacancy as it gets adapted for the small screen.

It won’t hit our TVs until next year, but who wants to wait until then to find out what’s going on?

The BBC released the snap of character Shirley (Julie McKenzie) and Samantha (Keeley Hawes) looking less than happy with each other. The mother in law and daughter in law have little to be pally about, given that Samantha has lost interest in her husband, Shirley’s son and all hell is about to break loose.

Not only that, but there’s a war in their village, Pagford, that they have to contend with.

The story opens with the death of Parish councillor Barry Fairbrother. His seat is on the council is now up for grabs and a war ensues as villagers fight for the spot.

Like any war, tactics are employed to bring down the opposition and those running for the election find their deepest, darkest secrets are coming to the surface.

It also stars Michael Gambon, Keeley Forsyth, Rufus Jones, Rory Kinnear and Monica Dolan.
