So who’s going to have the Christmas No 1 this year? Band Aid? The X Factor winner? Or someone else entirely?
Well if the people behind the latest Facebook festive chart-topper campaign have their way, it’ll be rock veterans Iron Maiden with their decidedly un-Christmassy anthem The Number Of The Beast.
Yes, this kind of thing has become something of a tradition now – ever since the Facebook campaign which saw Rage Against The Machine beat X Factor champion Joe McElderry to the top spot in 2009.
But this year it’s this song which the page Iron Maiden For Christmas No 1 want you to be listening to – Satanic lyrics and all – while you tuck in to your turkey:
And like previous Christmas chart campaigns before it this particular cause – which first surfaced online last month – has been gathering momentum in recent days, with over 15,000 people signing up to the Facebook page since it appeared.
The campaign has also caught the bookies’ attention, with the likes of Paddy Power and Ladbrokes offering odds of 50-1 on The Number Of The Beast making it to the top.
It echoes the 2013 effort to get AC/DC’s Highway To Hell to the top spot for the festive season.
Although that one failed to stop last year’s X Factor winner Sam Bailey in her tracks, it still gave the band their first ever UK top ten hit, ultimately peaking at number four.
Iron Maiden however have already topped the charts in the UK with 1991′s Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter – a song which, coincidentally, knocked Cliff Richard’s festive anthem Saviour’s Day from pole position.
