Manchester United are weighing up a January move for Real Madrid defender Pepe, according to reports.

The Express have claimed that Real coach Carlo Ancelotti plans to make Chelsea target Raphael Varane a mainstay at the heart of Los Blancos’ defence, and with the 21-year-old set to cement his place in the club’s starting team, Pepe could be sacrificed as a result.

It is believed that Manchester City have identified the Portugal international as a potential partner for captain Vincent Kompany, but that United boss Louis van Gaal is also weighing up a move for the 31-year-old in the upcoming transfer window.

United have suffered with injuries to their back line this season, and it is claimed that Pepe could be the man to solve the Red Devils’ defensive issues.
