The Metropolitan police have released CCTV images of a man starting a fire at a BP petrol station in south-east London.

A man in a long black coat is seen in the images squirting petrol onto the forecourt, dropping a lit object onto flammable liquid before running away.

Luckily a brave member of public quickly ran to the blaze with an fire extinguisher and put it out before it could spread.

Investigating officers are now looking for the man responsible, saying he may have ‘burnt off his eyebrows as well as his hair’.

Detective Constable Karl Buckwell said: ‘This was an incredibly dangerous and reckless thing to do – there were cars and people filling up in the petrol station.

‘The petrol station is surrounded by flats and is located on a very busy road.’
