He was the 1970s TV superhero who saved the lives of countless schoolchildren by teaching them the three pillars of the Green Cross Code: ‘Stop, Look, Listen.’
And now he’s making a comeback. Dave Prowse, the West Country actor who played The Green Cross Code man, has been brought back by insurer More Than, who got him to dust off his old green suit after it was reported that 10,384 pedestrians were hit by cars last year after stepping out without looking.
Prowse wasn’t just the Green Cross Code man either – he also played Darth Vader in Star Wars – although the Dark Lord’s distinctive voice was provided by American actor James Earl Jones.
Prowse is also part of the increasingly select group of television personalities who didn’t do anything horrid when working with children in that gilded age of British telly.
He really is a true superhero.
