She’s the queen of comedy, a bestselling author and one of the funniest, most respected actors and writers in TV and film.
Basically, we’d like to be friends with her (or at least go out for some Cheesy Blasters).
From brilliant work on Saturday Night Live, writing one of the greatest movies comedies ever, creating 30 Rock and speaking up for the joys of friendship, confidence and food, Tina Fey is the best.
So as her new ensemble comedy This Is Where I Leave You hits the screens, here’s a look at just why we can’t get enough of Tina (and yes, some of these are really Liz Lemon but as she’s basically a fictionalised, romantically disastrous version of Ms Fey, we’ll allow it…)
1. She had a magnificent yearbook photo
A picture that smacks so strongly of adolescent self-obsession that Fey later used the image in an episode of 30 Rock.
2. She wrote and starred in a classic
The internet, nay, the world, would be a different, less grool place without Mean Girls.
3. She’s a trailblazer
Fey became the first ever female head writer of Saturday Night Live in 1999, an experience that begat the awesome 30 Rock.
4. She gave us the perfect response to trends
Feel free to apply it to waxed moustaches, Joan of Arc hairdos – whatever Vice-approved nonsense annoys you, basically.
5. She taught us how to get out of a jam
A sandwich would never betray you. Tina Fey knows this.
6. She influenced an election
Through a dead-on impression and making a ‘pew pew!’ gun noise, Fey thankfully ensured a dangerously underqualified Alaskan was kept well away from the White House.
7. She helped us embrace adulthood
Rest assured that spending your Friday night with Netflix and crisps is exactly what Tina would do.
8. She captured the pain of tarnished memories
‘They’ve left Tom Bombadil out of the movies? How DARE they?’ Or some variation thereof.
9. She shares your secret shame
Don’t pretend you don’t watch Honey Boo Boo/enjoy a Greggs’ steak bake/etc – embrace your guilty pleasure with a song.
10. She gave us a stock phrase for wonderful things
This perfect reaction was actually coined by Fey’s daughter Alice. A smart little cookie.
11. She nailed Girls with this parody sketch
‘Blerta from Albania’ gave sage advice to self-absorbed Hannah Horvath and co in this skit, including ‘If you speak, they will know you are simple. If they know you are simple, they will drown you in river.’
12. She was one-half of the best Golden Globe hosts ever
Put the two of the funniest people alive, friends for over 20 years, together and what do you get? Proof that awards show hosts can be, well, good. Neil Patrick Harris has a lot to live up to at the Oscars…
