Remember Sister Cristina Scuccia, the singing nun who took The Voice Italy by storm? Well she’s back – with a rather unexpected choice of debut single.
Yes, the lady who wowed the Italian judges, notched up over 50m views on YouTube and duetted with Kylie Minogue is now making her mark on the world with her version of Madonna’s 80s classic Like A Virgin.
And suffice to say it’s a rather more chaste version than we had from the Material Girl, with rather less writhing around on gondolas and more posing in front of Venetian landmarks – while the song itself sounds completely different.
You can hear Sister Cristina’s version here:
And by way of a reminder, here’s what Madonna’s original sounds like:
Of course if the song sounds like an unlikely choice for the lady whose version of Alicia Keys’ No-One turned her into an overnight star, then she has a simple explanation for it.
‘Reading the text, without being influenced by previous interpretations, you discover that it is a song about the power of love to renew people and rescue them from their past,’ she said.
‘We have transformed this song from the pop-dance piece which it was, into a romantic ballad – something more similar to a lay prayer than a pop piece.’
